The Review

It is certainly nice to see another ‘throwback’ to the days of West Coast IPA yore.

This 650ml bottle pours a clear, pale golden yellow colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly eggshell white head, which leaves some stellar cobwebbed lace around the glass as it lazily sinks out of sight.

It smells of bready and crackery cereal malt, muddled domestic citrus rind, some hard water flintiness, and more leafy, weedy, and floral green hop bitters.  The taste is gritty and grainy pale malt, some thin orange, red grapefruit, and lemon citrus peel, a damp minerality, and some plain earthy, musty, and piney hoppiness.  The carbonation is adequate in its palate-coddling frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and more or less smooth, with nothing really getting all up in my proverbial grill at this point in the procedure.  It finishes trending dry, the hops exhibiting the most lingering swagger.

Overall – yup, this is certainly no Milkshake/Brut/NEIPA new-fangled version of the now broad style, but a simple hoppy (citrus and forest floor detritus) affair, with a malt bill that just keeps things between the ditches.  No sign of the extra point and half of the ol’ wowee sauce, which is always a bonus.  Balanced and quite quaffable.
