The Review

The Jungle Bird is denoted as a ‘tropical dark sour’, and it appears to be a beery ode to the Tiki cocktail of the same name (I see a rum barrel-aged version in the future!).

This 650ml bottle pours a sort of hazy, very dark brown colour, with four fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and yet fizzy beige head, which leaves some streaky island group lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of lightly roasted caramel malt, some oily nuttiness, subtly tart dark orchard fruity notes, and some musty, earthy, and floral noble hop bitters.  The taste is grainy and crackery caramel malt, a hint of free-range ashiness, underripe pineapple, overripe lime, very dilute brown sugar syrup, an indistinct estery sourness, and more understated earthy, leafy, and herbal verdant hoppiness.  The carbonation is quite active in its stimulating frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and kind of smooth, I suppose, as the sourness levels here are more or less manageable.  It finishes trending dry, the muddled tart fruitiness carrying the day.

Overall, this is a rather pleasant and engaging sour brew, the various titular mixed-drink esters (which came from hops, really?) working well to provide a minor South Seas titter in this reporter.  Worth checking out, especially for those of you out there who like their sourness a little (or a lot) more on the balanced side of things.
