The Review

The Wolf is a hazy pale ale, and I was informed that they are apparently changing the recipe for this one soon, but this is the one in front of me, and not a frontal lobotomy, right?

This 650ml bottle pours a murky, medium banana yellow colour, with three fingers of puffy, rocky, and creamy bone-white head, which leaves some decent scattered sudsy soapscum (who doesn’t love alliteration?) lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of gritty and grainy cereal malt, a strong hard water flintiness, muddled domestic citrus rind, and some leafy, weedy, and dank piney green hoppiness. The taste is grainy and crackery pale malt, a still heady damp minerality, muted orange and white grapefruit rind, and more leafy, herbal and piney verdant hoppiness.  The carbonation is adequate in its palate-coating frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and mostly smooth, with nothing really getting in the way of a swell time at this particular juncture. It finishes trending dry, the grainy malt and mineral character predominating.

Overall – this is a generally well-made version of the style, the ‘NEPA’, with well water and local malt at the forefront. Crisp, and easy to put back as things start to appear to be more autumn-like the past few days (took my kid to his first day of Kindergarten this morning, so, yeah). No biggies, but I’m not quite ready for pumpkin brew, not just yet, or if I ever was.
