This 650ml bottle pours a hazy, very pale golden straw ‘colour’, with four fingers of puffy, rocky, and chunky ecru head, which leaves some random streaky and striated lace around the glass as it lazily subsides.
It smells of gritty and bready wheat malt, a lesser pale and caramelized graininess, some prominent rainbow peppercorn spiciness, subtle earthy yeast, a hint of citrus pith, and very tame leafy and floral green hop bitters. The taste is grainy and crackery pale malt, a lesser cereal-forward wheatiness, some weird floral acridity, mild earthy pepper mill output, and a further ephemeral earthy, weedy, and musty floral verdant hoppiness. The carbonation is fairly mild in its quotidian frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and mostly smooth, with nothing really taking the time to mess about here – am I starting to seem expectant about this, or something? It finishes trending dry, the grainy wheat malt lording it over all other lingering notes.
Overall, this is indeed a well-made version of the style, with the ‘grains of paradise’ performing a swell stand-in for the usual coriander and black pepper (in fact, they are damned-near identical, IMHO), and the chamomile thankfully AWOL, for the most part. At any rate, very easy to put back, and a pleasant adjunct (hah!) to the fact that I just now found out that there’s another season of Archer (squeeeeee!) to start watching with the rest of this!
