The Review

What we have here is an old-school Munich-style dark lager, so named after a former mayor of Olds who was apparently instrumental in installing water services in the town, which of course goes a long way in supporting the work of a brewery, as we all know!

This 355ml can pours a clear, dark orange-brick brown colour, with two fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat creamy tan head, which leaves some decent broken cobweb lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.

It smells of roasted, bready and doughy cereal malt, some muddled black stone fruitiness, a further free-range ashiness, and some plain earthy, musty, and floral noble hop bitters.  The taste is semi-sweet, grainy and bready caramel malt, medium chocolate, still hard to differentiate dark orchard fruity notes, some wet char, a hint of stale cafe-au-lait, and more understated earthy, leafy, and grassy green hoppiness.  The carbonation is fairly benign in its bored-seeming frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, with perhaps a touch of char getting in the way of the ideal here.  It finishes off-dry, the malt and cocoa essences most prominent in their lingering poses.

Overall – this is certainly an agreeable enough version of the style, with a nice even (smoky) sweetness exhibited throughout. Full-flavoured, and easy to put back, I do believe that they have a winner on their hands with this one.
