The Review

O.T. Brewing is another new Calgary outfit, and this is their IPA – not sure what the slang ‘500’ is referencing. Kilograms of hops in the batch?

This 355ml can pours a hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, rocky, and somewhat bubbly off-white head, which leaves some dense sudsy cloud pattern lace around the glass as it lazily seeps out of sight.

It smells of dank pine resin, mandarin orange, canned pineapple, chewed-out bubblegum, a further indistinct tropical fruitiness, grainy and crackery cereal malt, and some understated leafy, musty, and floral green hop bitters.  The taste is gritty and grainy pale malt, muddled domestic citrus rind, some more exotic mango and kiwi fruity notes, a damp minerality, and more leafy, weedy, and piney verdant hoppiness.  The carbonation is fairly laid-back in its palate-pleasing frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and generally smooth, with a wee airy creaminess evolving as things warm up a tad around here.  It finishes off-dry, the freight train of frootiness exhibiting the most lingering oomph.

Overall – this comes across as a well-made, rather hoppy brew, with very little attendant bitterness.  Lots of flavour, and deftly balanced.  I don’t say this often, but I sure could go for another one right now, and it’s only partly due to the 30-plus degrees outside (and near that inside).
