The Review

Legend 7 is a rather new Calgary brewing concern, whose, er, marketing thing appears to be the number seven – as in this offering is brought to you by envy, the sixth of the seven deadly sins.  What about ‘seventh son of a seventh son’?  Anyways, I digress.

This 330ml, uniquely shaped bottle (for an Alberta brewery, FWIW) pours a clear, pale golden yellow colour, with four fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and mildly bubbly bone-white head, which leaves some decent dense tropical forest pattern lace around the glass as it lazily sinks out of sight.

It smells of gritty and grainy cereal malt, a bit of warm apple and pear skin, subtle lager yeast, and some zingy earthy, leafy, and grassy green hop bitters.  The taste is grainy and crackery pale malt, a touch of generic citrus peel, muddled pome fruity notes, a faint petrol astringency, and more leafy, floral, and grassy verdant hoppiness.  The carbonation is adequate in its palate-satisfying frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and mostly smooth, as the hops make a minor dent in the proceedings at this juncture.  It finishes trending dry, the crackery malt and still good to go hops lingering like nobody else is watching.

Overall – this comes across as a very respectful and true-to-form version of this old-school style.  Nice and crisp and refreshing, all within a balanced framework, I could see killing a number of these on a sunny backyard deck, or the like, as Spring becomes sprung.
