Lakefront New Grist Ginger Style Beer

This 12oz bottle pours a clear, very pale golden straw colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and mildly bubbly bone-white head, which leaves a bit of splattered sudsy lace in places around the glass as it quickly fizzles away.
It smells of sharp, musty ginger root, a sugary, thankfully indistinct graininess, other muddled earthy spices (maybe some black pepper and cinnamon), and the suggestion of metallic alcohol. The taste contains a lessened ginger flavour, with the heat remaining, a grainy, pithy, and tainted-seeming sweetness (think aspartame), more flat earthy spice, and a touch of dead leafy and weedy hop bitterness. The carbonation is fairly light-footed in its frothy tripping across my palate, the body medium-light in weight, and so-so smooth, the rice apparently not capable of totally obfuscating that sorghum clamminess. It finishes off-dry, the ginger lingering well amongst the still tongue-scrape worthy ‘malt’.
At least the guest ginger performs multiple duties here – beyond its flavour and zest, it mostly obscures the banalities of the two non-standard grain sources, a typical issue in true gluten-free beers. Not particularly difficult to drink, but man, is it making me jones for some Royal Jamaican on this sunny ‘Autumn’ day. Yeah, snow.
