This 35ml bottle pours a clear, bright medium bronzed amber colour, with two fingers of puffy, somewhat rocky, and creamy off-white head, which leaves some low-lying island cay lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.
It smells of candy-like muddled citrus and tropical fruit, semi-sweet grainy and biscuity caramel malt, a flinty stoniness, and further leafy weedy, and herbal hop bitters. The taste is lightly toasted caramel malt, some sugary biscuit essence, still hard to discern exotic fruity notes, a twinge of ethereal white pepper, and more weedy, grassy, and herbal hoppiness. The carbonation is fairly understated in its plain and yet utile frothiness, the body an adequate middleweight, and mostly smooth, just a hint of clumsy-ass hops working their, um, what’s the opposite of magic? It finishes off-dry, the lingering neutered caramel malt still jousting with some niggling fruity and green-ish hops.
Overall, a pleasant enough version of that moving target American IPA – the peppy and well-rounded hops doing well to counteract the base malt sweetness, with some of that Northeast US chalky thing just moving on in. Yeah, I know that sounds like any and every other generic review of said style that you’ve seen of late, so I’ll qualify it by saying – watch out Curly Horse, Honest Paul is more than just a name.
