The Review

What we have here is a ‘banana brown ale’, apparently.  Man, it’s been a long time since I’ve been to Black Diamond.  Anyways.

This 473ml can pours a clear, amber highlighted, dark brown colour, with two fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and mildly bubbly tan head, which leaves some scattered snow rime lace around the glass as it quickly fades away.

It smells of overripe banana mush, bready and doughy caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, demarara sugar, a bit of earthy yeastiness, and very tame leafy, musty, and floral green hops.  The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, damp banana chips, musty yeast, a dry bar-top nuttiness, some wet minerality, and more understated leafy, floral, and herbal hoppiness.  The carbonation is fairly restrained in its innocuous-seeming frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and generally smooth, with a wee airy creaminess evolving as things warm up a tad around here.  It finishes off-dry, the liquid banana bread character predominating.

Overall – yup, they more or less nailed the confectionery aspect of this offering, even somehow incorporating the flavour that makes the sweet that much better – chocolate chips.  At any rate, interesting, and worth checking out, especially if you are in the market for dessert.
