The Review

Touted as the Limited 20th Anniversary Edition, I gather that this is a remake of a bock that they made back in 1996?  Made with the usual good stuff, in addition to some new Mandarina Bavaria hops, from of course, Germany!

This 650ml bottle pours a clear, medium copper amber colour, with four fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and well bubbly tan head, which leaves some splendid tacky snow rime lace around the glass as things slowly seep away.

It smells of semi-sweet, bready and doughy caramel malt, reduced apple and pear puree, a touch of estery alcohol, and very weak earthy, leafy, and floral hop bitters. The taste is sugary caramel malt, a further bit of toffee square sweetness, mixed generic citrus and pome fruity notes, a hint of phenolic booze, and more wan leafy, weedy, and floral green hoppiness.  The bubbles are quite understated in their barely interested-seeming frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and mostly smooth, maybe a minor chunk being carved out by the inherent wowee sauce. It finishes well off-dry, the malt, fruit, and alcohol not to be denied.

Well, this certainly has the majority of the hallmarks of the style, if rendered in a plain and somewhat simple manner. Not particularly difficult to put back even right now, as spring gives way to summer’s heady allure.
