The Review

Grizzly Paw has begun producing and distributing more and more of their seasonal offerings, what with their still relatively new brewery on the outskirts of Canmore.  This apparently is brewed as an Irish-style oatmeal stout, and has a cheeky name and a mountain park tourist shop-worthy PG cartoon label.

This 341ml bottle pours a solid black, with subtle basal cola highlights, and one fat finger of foamy, frothy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves some splashing, falling water lace around the glass as things duly recede.

It smells of dry cocoa powder, bready and biscuity caramel malt, a touch of black licorice, mild day-old coffee notes, and earthy, leafy hops. The taste is almost crisp, crackery caramel malt, bittersweet chocolate, a soft drupe fruitiness, acrid espresso, overripe pear, a hint of cream, and earthy, weedy hops. The carbonation is present, but generally agreeable, the body a sturdy medium weight, and smooth like well sugared and creamed coffee. It finishes off-dry, the grainy malt holding on for dear life in the face of the lingering coffee and burgeoning metallic alcohol character.

An easy to drink, coffee-spiked oatmeal stout, with a weirdly plain, if still approachable mouthfeel. I can’t exactly now say that I’ve been punched by a moose knuckle, as the booze generally keeps it down, so I suppose I’ve just had a good taste of it, then.
