This 22oz bottle pours a slightly hazy, medium golden yellow colour, with a near-teeming tower of puffy, very finely foamy, and somewhat creamy off-white head, which leaves some layered sudsy lace around the glass as it lazily recedes.
It smells of semi-sweet, grainy and biscuity caramel malt, a touch of cereal-borne wheatiness, edgy yeast, muddled domestic fruity notes, a sense of black pepper dust unused, and some plain leafy, weedy, and floral green hoppiness. The taste is more pleasantly biscuity pale malt, a sidelong wheaty character, some understated phenolic yeastiness, still laid-back citrus, apple, and ephemerally tropical fruit notes, and more weak leafy and grassy hop bitterness. The carbonation is adequate in its generally supportive and oft-playful frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and smooth enough, I suppose, with a small, and more or less bullied creaminess trying to get aloft. It finishes trending dry, the biscuity nature of the malt really outshining any yeasty or spicy counterbalance.
Overall, this seems very much like an ESB (one of my favourite underrated styles) that has had a bit of the ol’ Belgian treatment attached to it, i.e. the yeast and fruitiness, as it were. Very easy to drink, and a pleasant imbibement, once again despite my lack of understanding of this brewery’s marketing ethos.
