This 473ml can pours a clear, dark orange-brick brown colour, with three fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves a bit of chunky splattered lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.
It smells of roasted and bready caramel malt, some earthy nuttiness, bittersweet cocoa powder, and fairly restrained leafy, musty, and floral green hops. The taste is semi-sweet, bready and doughy caramel malt, a touch of free-range ashiness, mild day-old coffee notes, plain chocolate, a hint of bruised stone fruit, and more understated earthy, leafy, and floral verdant hoppiness. The carbonation is adequate in its structurally sound frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and generally smooth, with perhaps a suggestion of char gently marring the surface sheen here. It finishes off-dry, the malt and sundry essences keeping up appearances.
Overall, this is a rather well-made and tasty version of the style, with lots of robust flavours with which to contend. Hard to say if this is more English or American in its bearing, but I always have a ready answer to that conundrum – it’s a Canadian porter, silly!
