The Review

A ‘Vegan Milk Stout’ – how, one wonders?  Apparently instead of lactose, they used ‘creme liquor [sic] base’ – you’d think that the latter would have at least trace milk solids in it, yeah?

This 355ml can pours a pretty solid black, with subtle amber basal edges, and a teeming tower of puffy, rocky, and silken brown head, which leaves some decent thickly webbed lace around the glass as it very slowly dissipates.

It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, rich dark chocolate, cold cream, ethereal coffee notes, and some plain earthy, herbal, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, medium cocoa powder, crème brûlée, a bit of free-range ashiness, day-old coffee grounds, and more understated earthy, musty, and dead floral hoppiness.  The carbonation is quite mild in its palate-satiating frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and genuinely smooth, with a nice airy creaminess pretty much there from the get-go.  It finishes off-dry, the malt, cocoa, and milky essences showing the most lingering vigor.

Overall – if this truly doesn’t contain any lactose at all, then they’ve done a bang-up job in replicating it, as the flavours shout out ‘milk stout’!  Easy to throw back, and with no sign of the near 2 extra points of ABV, a pleasant tipple as Winter once again bares its teeth around here.
