This 12oz bottle pours a fairly solid black abyss, with scant basal amber edges, and three zaftig fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat bubbly brown head, which leaves some decent defrosting back windshield lace around the glass as it lazily dissipates.
It smells of prominent sugary orange peel, milk chocolate, roasted caramel malt, and some tame earthy, leafy, and soused-up floral green hop bitters. The taste is rich cocoa pudding, those candied orange ‘slices’ that you get in huge bags at drug stores, gritty and grainy caramel malt, some free-range ashiness, a hint of anise spice, and more well understated leafy, weedy, and besotted floral hoppiness. The carbonation is average in its palate-cuddling frothiness, the body a sturdy medium weight, and generally smooth, with a subtle creaminess seeping in as things warm up a tad around here. It finishes off-dry, the chocolate, sweet orange, and roastiness presiding.
Overall – yep, this is essentially Christmas mornings past in a glass for me – a piece of Terry’s Chocolate Orange dipped in a shot of Grand Marnier. Great, great stuff – if I knew there was a party somewhere that had this on tap, I would most certainly crash it.
