The Review

Bridge Brewing is located in North Vancouver, and brewed this strong red ale for the holiday season, specifically the Craft Advent Calendar in Western Canada.  An aptly-named beer, given the generous ABV!

This 355ml bottle pours a murky, dark red-tinted brown colour, with two fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat bubbly beige head, which leaves some wispy layered cloud lace around the glass as it slowly and lazily recedes.

It smells of rather sweet biscuity caramel/toffee malt, orange marmalade, lemon and key lime pie, some leafy, piney, and floral green hop bitters, and a menacing dose of hovering estery alcohol. The taste is bready, doughy caramel malt, grainy toffee candies, muddled yet fleshy citrus, oily bar-top nuts, and a testy, if highly perfumed leafy, piney, and herbal hoppiness.  The carbonation is fairly low-lying in its tame and lackadaisical frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and mostly smooth, but for a wee metallic hop and boozy edginess. It finishes still pretty sweet – though the fruity and pine resin essences at least provide a modicum of balance.

Everything about this offering comes across as just short of straight-up good – maybe it’s the less than thoroughly integrated 18-proof alcohol heat, I dunno. Anyways, this is a sweet, holiday confection-friendly, and warming tipple, worthy of sipping away at whilst watching that Ron Swanson Yule Log video, or the like.
