The Review

Alberta and Saskatchewan brewpub chain Brewsters have begun bottling some of their rotating and seasonal offerings, and among the latest is their Marzen-style autumn lager – things may have just wrapped up in Germany, but October looms in front of us over here, and a stronger brew does not sound like a bad idea!

This 650ml bottle pours a clear, bright medium bronzed amber hue, with a minor cap of puffy, foamy, and mostly soapy off-white head, which leaves some layered rings of bleeding paint swath lace around the glass as things genially recede.

It smells of tangy bready, doughy caramel malt, a hint of toffee/nougat sweetness, a bit of spiced dark fruit, and soft earthy, leafy noble hops. The taste is more of that spicy, bready, and sweet caramel malt, buttery toffee, swarthy honey, browned apples and pears, and rather mild, but somehow supportive leafy, weedy hops. The carbonation is fairly average in its somewhat swirling frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, a smidge smooth, and ethereally creamy. It finishes well off-dry, the robust fruity maltiness duly protracting the experience.

Overall, a pleasant quaff for the changing of the seasons, when the days are predictably getting chillier. The spicy malt tendencies are a bit different than I’ve experienced in other Brewsters offerings, and are quite welcome. Easy to put back, and a sturdy aid in toasting whatever floats your boat.
