This 750ml, caged and corked bottle pours a hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, loosely foamy, and mildly bubbly off-white head, which leaves some decent layered Swiss cheese lace around the glass as it gently evaporates.
It smells of bready and grainy caramel malt, sugary coriander spice, weak Belgian yeasty notes, muddled peppercorn notes, wet banana chips, domestic citrus flesh, some earthy mustiness, and plain leafy, weedy, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, a bit of simple syrup, more sweetened coriander and clove spiciness, a gentle Low Countries yeasty thing, banana pudding, fading generic peppery essences, and more understated earthy, musty, and floral hoppiness. The carbonation is quite active in its palate-probing frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and mostly smooth, with nothing really getting all handsy, as such, here. It finishes off-dry, the spice and citrus characters giving the lingering malt a run for its money.
Overall – well, not a bad attempt at ‘imperializing’ a witbier, I gotta say. It maintains the flavour, while not betraying the amped-up booze factor. Very worthy of checking out, even if, like yours truly, you don’t really give a flying flip about the show that ‘inspired’ it, but still have to deal with winter.
