The Review

This offering, part of a new ‘1985’ mixed-pack from Big Rock, celebrating their 30th anniversary by re-brewing and releasing the first 3 beers that they made back in that year, with, and this is the best part, commensurate pricing.

This 330ml bottle (THAT much has changed) pours a clear, dark red cola brown colour, with two fingers of puffy, generally foamy, and somewhat bubbly tan head, which leaves some splattered paint job lace around the glass as things gently subside.

It smells of gritty, crackery, and lightly roasted caramel malt, subtle dry coffee beans, ethereally sour milk, a suggestion of bittersweet powdered chocolate, and plain leafy, weedy, and damp earthy hops. The taste is bready, lightly biscuity caramel malt, dry cafe-au-lait, a bit of wet ash, hints of yeast, chalky cocoa, and a still understated earthy, leafy, and dead grassy hop bitterness. The bubbles are adequate in their supportive and mouth-tingling frothiness, the body a sturdy middleweight for the style, but a bit astringent on the front palate to be considered all that smooth. It finishes mostly dry, the malt maintaining its smoky stance, while the coffee and chocolate fall out of contention.

Well, I was a pre-teen in 1985, and had no idea of Big Rock’s existence (other than the fact that I went to Big Rock Elementary School, and lived about 10 miles from the eponymous glacial erratic), but beer – of course not. Anyways, I eventually found out, and it quickly removed me from the Molson Canadian-fueled bad memories of my very limited teenaged drinking experiences – and because of stuff like that, this is a pretty cool deal, at least as far as marketing stunts go.
