This 650ml bottle pours a slightly glassy, medium brassy amber colour, with two fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and pleasantly creamy dirty white head, which leaves a decent spectrum of melting iceberg shelf lace around the glass as it genially recedes.
It smells of somewhat bitter orange and watery grapefruit flesh, a further touch of lemon-lime citrus essence, soft bready caramel malt, a hint of metallic stoniness, and further floral, leafy hops. The taste is fairly laid-back grapefruit, passionfruit, and blood orange rind, more grainy caramel malt, a pervasive wet breadiness, and muddled floral, moderately perfumed hops. The bubbles are a bit peppy, and only edgy enough to actually make me notice them, the body medium-light in weight, for the style, and a bit too pithy in the overall smoothness. It finishes well off-dry, the caramel malt apparently less than willing to give it all up to the well-preserved citrusy and piney hop bitterness.
An enjoyable IPA, in the end, the freshness and earnestness quite hard to ignore. Not overly complex, but that’s hardly a defect. This is good now, but I suspect that there will yet be a few tweaks here and there, before the next time I come across this, hopefully in that little pub overlooking the lake, where my choices can now extend beyond Kokanee for ‘local’ brew.
