The Review

‘Goose the Pamplemousse’ – me likey! Is there such a thing as a ‘cactus grapefruit’, or is there some unspecified, actual cactus in this brew?

This 650ml bottle pours a clear, medium orange-brick amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and certainly bubbly ecru head, which leaves some wafting campfire smoke lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells of pungent grapefruit rind, a bit of fleshy grapefruit and orange juice, grainy pale and caramel malt, and a hint of floral, leafy, and piney green hop bitters.  The taste is bitter white grapefruit (the whole damned thing), kind of biscuity caramel malt, maybe a touch of wet chalkiness, and more tame earthy, leafy, and floral hoppiness.  The carbonation is fairly light on its mostly frothy feet, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, with a small airy creaminess arising as things warm up a tad. It finishes off-dry, the underlying malt doing well to maintain this one’s street cred in the face of a still robust and lingering grapefruit pith bitterness.

Overall, it comes down to this – if you like fresh grapefruit, and you’re not an IPA purist, then you’re probably going to like this. Easy to drink, nice and crisp, and yeah, quite refreshing on a hot summer day.  I was going to make a comparison to all those radlers proliferating out there right now, but with 6 (undetectable) points of the wowee sauce, Cactus Grapefruit IPA doesn’t have time for that.
