The Review

Hearthstone Brewery’s Wyld Raspberry is a Berliner Weisse style beer, a traditional northern German offering made with wheat and a lactic souring agent, which is then typically served with a shot of fruit syrup to cut the tartness.  All of that is now encapsulated in a single serving vessel in our brave new world.

This 355ml can pours a slightly hazy, medium pinkish peach juice colour, with two fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat caked pale pink head, which leaves a bit of streaky lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.

It smells of tart, not quite ripe raspberries, further lemon and wild strawberry fruity notes, a subtle sour milkiness, lightly salted white bread, and ethereal leafy and weedy green hop bitters. The taste is bready wheat malt, a lessened tart raspberry cream thing, saltine crackers, lemon and orange rind, and some gentle earthy and leafy hoppiness.  The carbonation is adequate in its perky and palate-lifting frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, once you get accustomed to that hovering fruity acidity. It finishes fairly dry, the gritty wheatiness and lingering raspberry and lemon tartness not rolling any other way.

Overall, a very pleasant and refreshing tipple, on another warm and humid summer day.  Nicely tart, with some engaging fruitiness, Wyld Raspberry is certainly easy to drink, and worthy of seeking out if you’re a fan of the style.
